What is LOVE?
According to the dictionary, LOVE is a feeling of strong or constant affection for a person.
But what does the Bible say?
Most times, when you search for love in the scriptures, you get 1st Corinthians 13:4-8.
Which says:
4Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant 5 or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful;6 it does not rejoice at wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. 7 Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8 Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away.
The above scripture is quoted ALLLLLL the time regarding love. I, myself always thought this is what love really meant. I mean the person you love should exhibit all those characteristics, but one day I came across 1st John 4:18.
18 There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.
Then a lightbulb went off!
I can go to God about anything! There is nothing I hide from him!
It’s not like I can hide anything from him anyway because he is omnipresent, but I mean when I go into my prayer closet; I cry, I explain to him what I did wrong or what someone did to me and he then tells how I could’ve handed handle things differently.
As I continued to do daily this, I began to realize that God‘s love is PERFECT!
From that verse alone, I knew that whatever relationship I would end up in, I needed to have that same feeling that I have with God. I needed to feel safe, I needed to know that I can go to my partner about anything without feeling anxiety. I should be able to tell that person anything; I should be able to express myself without feeling anxious or fearful of what they may think or if they’d judge me.
Ever since the revelation, if I felt anxious about telling a partner anything, I knew it was not going to work; this is how I gauge my relationships. If I can’t speak to you about my childhood trauma or my past you’re not the one for me. Those things are not expressed to everyone so If I’m not comfortable about telling you, it’s not going to work.
Another thing is since God‘s LOVE is perfect do not accept anything less than that!
If you continue reading 1st John 4:19-20, it says “We love GOD because he first loved us. Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen.”
A man or woman does not know LOVE unless he has a relationship with God because GOD IS LOVE!
God will bring someone into your life that will love him more than he loves you and if that man can love God more than he loves you, God will show him how to love you. That man will seek God every day just to know how to love you.
If you don’t have God in your life, then you don’t know love because there is no love without God.
